Picking Burs

So here's my second post ever and in only a little over 5 months. Told you I wouldn't write often...

Anyway, here's the story of the evening: I just spent about a half an hour chasing Dia (my roommate's dog, who is a 70-lb., all muscle yellow lab) around the living room with a pair of tweezers. She had a bur on her leg and did not want it removed. Eventually I was able to trap her enough to get the bur out, but not without her doing everything possible to avoid said picking, including picking at it herself (which made her yelp, poor thing).

This made me wonder how often we do this with God. He sees something bad in our lives and wants to remove it for our good, but we won't let Him because "it will hurt." So we do everything we can to avoid the removal. Stay in a unhealthy relationship too long, hang on to a bad habit that is between where we're at now and something so much better from God, or maybe even "pick" at the situation ourselves. It's so hard to see sometimes that while the removal may hurt at first, it will feel a lot better when it's gone. I know I've seen this in my life with things I thought were going to be too painful to let go of (and were at first hard to get over), but in the end I see how much better off I am and how faithful the Lord is for having removed the bur.
